PlowShares Coffee Now at Dora

Nicole at Dora Coffee gave me a bag of Plowshares coffee the other day to try it out and to let me know about this great coffee roaster that was not only making good coffee but doing good things with their profits.

Plowshares asks the question: Is your coffee strong enough to fight poverty?  The answer is yes, if you drink Plowshares coffee.  A dollar from the sale of every bag goes to support the Henry Street Settlement workforce development center.

The Henry Street settlement is an wonderful organization across the street from where we live and provides many vital services to the lower east side community in addition to having a lively performance and art space.

Plowshares coffee can be purchased online or at Dora.

Grumpy Comes to Essex Street

Grumpy is the one on the left
At this point I am a hard core regular at Dora Coffee which is oh so conveniently located on the corner of East Broadway and Clinton a half block away from my place.   Now I find out 2 blocks further West the super hip high end mini NYC coffee chain Grumpy is opening up a tiny little space at 13 Essex street.  I peaked in yesterday and things look like they should be ready to open very soon.

I know it's gentrification and all and that's suppose to be bad but can I just say how much I love the new Lower East Side!  It's so exciting to see how much as changed in the 5 years since I moved here and how much of a foodie destination the neighborhood has become, as I like to say, the Lower East Side is the Brooklyn of Manhattan.

Coffee, Cocoa and Citrus at The New Amsterdam Market

How perfect:  as the weather is getting chillier, the next New Amsterdam Market is all about warm beverages and fresh, seasonal heirloom Citrus from Florida.  Cee Bee's Citrus is one of the few remaining family owned farms in Florida and I think it is great that they will be taking part in the market as it will remind us all that citrus which has become so ubiquitous all year in super markets is actually a seasonal product and the season is just getting started.  In addition to bringing Heirloom oranges, grapefruits and tangerines with them they will also be giving out discount coupons for when you order from their site.

This is the time to be eating citrus since it tastes best and is shipped to order at peak freshness.  And while you are pondering your citrus purchase you can take part in one of the dizzying array of coffee and cocoa vendors and events.  All the major coffee folks will be there, including some of my faves like Mast Brothers Chocolate, Dora Coffee and Crop to Cup.

The most exciting news for me is that the New Amsterdam Market now has a Market School located at 224 Front street just a few blocks away from the market.  Get all the information on cuppings, a full list of vendors and events here.

Psssssst, Bagels and Lox and Cream Cheese and Coffee, Oh My!

Nicole, the owner of Dora's coffee, left a comment on my last Dora's posting alerting me and you, my dear readers, that tomorrow morning starting at 7 am there will be a limited supply of (free if I am reading it right) Kossar bagels, smoked salmon and cream cheese to go along with your most excellent cup of Stumptown coffee which Dora will be brewing exclusively.

This is just a little pre-opening peak so don't miss it!

If I can manage to get up that early I will be over there taking pictures to share here and enjoying a bagel with the works!

Dora opens it's doors for regular hours Monday November 22nd (I'll check and get back to you about what the hours are, I think 7am-4pm for now).

Dora Coffee 7 Days and Counting

My friend is opening up a coffee shop on my corner called Dora.  I've written about it before and now after months of preparation and renovation the opening is near and I'm very excited!  I walked by the other day to sneak a peak and although there is construction stuff everywhere you can see that it is going to be an amazing space and is worth the wait!  A lovingly restored tin ceiling, salvaged hardwood flooring, a nice size space that you want to hang out in and best of all there will be amazing Stumptown coffee.

You don't get much of a sense of it from the outside.
...but as you can see there is lots of activity on the inside and in a week's time a radical transformation will take place!  Nicole has been pouring coffee at the Hester Street market for the last couple of Sundays and told me she was hoping to open on the 15th of November.  I'll keep you posted.

Dora Coffee

I'm so excited:  on my corner East Broadway and Clinton a new really great coffee place is opening.  It's called: Dora.

Nicol, who is the proprietress of Dora, also works sometimes at Saxelby Cheese, so for months now I have be asking about Dora's progress.  When I walked by today and the gate was up I was thrilled to be able to catch a sneak preview and all I can say is:  wow.

Nicol has painstakingly stripped the original tin ceiling of all its many years of paint and put in some awesome reclaimed wood floors; not only is she going to be serving delicious Stumptown coffee she is going to be serving it in a most stylish space.  I can't wait!

Dora is located at 221 East Broadway just south of Clinton on the East Side.

I'll keep you up to date on the opening which should be in a few weeks.
