The Bowery Diner

Walking up the Bowery the other day I noticed this big sign next to the New Museum announcing a The Bowery Diner something about it's location and the sign made me think it wasn't going to be your usual ma and pa Greek diner so I did a little research...turns out it is going to be a diner in feel and look, and yes there will be doughnuts coffee and french fries but it is being opened by Mathieu Palombino the master mind behind what the New York Times Sam Sifton calls the best pizza in town Motorino.  Further digging has this diner defined as an American Bistro and a Steak House.

What ever it turns out to be it won't be typical.  For me it's nice to see something opening on this stretch of the Bowery other than an art gallery, a club or a high end groovy clothing/shoe store.

The New Museum's Visionary Series Presents: Alice Waters

When did The New Museum become such a  foodie destination?  Not only are they incorporating food into there events like the festival of ideas for the new city, and having Birdbath Bakery as their in house cafe/caterer now they are having my hero Alice Waters speak as the recipient of the Stuart Regen Visionaries award which honors leading international thinkers in the fields of art, architecture, design, and related disciplines of contemporary culture, to promote the innovations shaping intellectual life and defining the future now.

She will be speaking on Monday May 23rd at 7pm get your tickets here.  Don't wait this will sell out!

Festival of Idea's StreetFest and the opening of this years Hester Street Fair TOMORROW!

What a busy weekend of food events here on the Lower East Side!

As I posted about a few weeks ago May 7 is the opening of the Hester Street Fair and the New Museum's StreetFest.  The StreetFest  starts at 11am and goes to 7pm and will take place around the corner from the Museum between Chrystie and Forsyth streets in the Sara D Roosevelt boulevard park south of Houston with food, demonstrations, conversations and so much more go to their site and plan your visit!

In collaboration with The New Museum Hester Street Fair has it's opening day ceremonies and  the first ever Lower FEAST Side Food Festival.  Not to worry all your favorite non food vendors will be there as well.  The Hester Street Fair takes place at end of Hester street on the east side of Essex street here on the Lower East Side.  The Hester Street fair starts at 11 am but ends by 6pm.

My recommendation is you take the F train to East Broadway walk half a block and start your day at the Hester Street Fair and work your way north to the the StreetFest, keeping in mind that Bowery will also be alive with art happenings, galleries and other interesting, arty activities.

Get a good nights sleep and wear comfortable shoes!

Hester Street Fair

The Hester Street Fair which had it's inaugural season last year is back!  Opening day is Saturday May 7th, located at Hester and Essex Street.  The first weekend is going to be held in collaboration with the Lower East Side Food Festival a joint venture with the LES BID and the New Museum's Festival of Ideas.  The New Museums Festival of Idea's is going to also have a day long food festival which I will post about after Passover has passed over!

The good folks at the New Museum invited me to their press conference announcing the event and it looks like it's going to be a very exiting week (well 4 days) of activities, events and lots of really interesting speakers.  The festival is May 4-8th so mark it in your calendars!   Of particular interest to foodies is May 7th when not only can you can see your favorite vendors at the Hester Street Fair after a Winter off, but you can also wander around the Lower East Side Food Festival.  Which will be held in the Sara Roosevelt park between Rivington and Houston, Forsyth and Chrystie streets.

Like I said in addition to food there will be a lot of other things happening that week and it should be very fun, for sure check out the Festival's web site, of particular interest to me is the conference, where a lot of Architects , Mayors and other visonary folks will be speaking and taking part in conferences and workshops.

Here's the blurb from the site to wet your apetite:

A conference of symposia, lectures, and workshops with visionaries and leaders— including exemplary mayors, forecasters, architects, artists, economists, and technology experts—addressing the Festival themes: The Heterogeneous City; The Networked City; The Reconfigured City; and The Sustainable City. Events take place at The Cooper Union, New York University, and the New Museum, Wednesday to Saturday, May 4-7.

Much more on this later...
